There are all sorts of jobs connected to the coast and sea, from boat builders and tour guides to harbour masters, marine pilots, and those catching and selling fish.
During our Resilience Exhibition project, we spoke to 28 Cornish people from many walks of life. We asked them about their jobs and family connections to the sea. They told us what they love about where they live and the challenges and changes they had seen over their working lives.
These conversations are being used by researchers to better understand how people on the coast deal with changes through their working life. If we understand what helped people manage change in the past, we can better support people facing change in the future.
Three oral histories were adapted for the audio buoys in the exhibition, and you can hear them below. Other stories were shared in written form alongside storytellers’ portraits. Additional audio is included under Meet our Artists.
