SUMMARY:Introduction to Flexible Coding for Qualitative Marine Sustainability Research
DESCRIPTION:SMMR-Net are hosting Liliana Bastian and Dr. Sien van der Plank who will deliver a 2-hour workshop on 13th December 2022 from 14:00 -16:00. \nThis two-hour practical introduces flexible coding for the context of collaborative\, qualitative research in marine sustainability. Flexible coding is a contemporary approach to qualitative data analysis developed by Deterding and Waters (2018) that is especially well suited to collaborative and group coding work. \nThe discussion-based session aims to aid researchers in social and ecological sciences in applying deductive and inductive coding to identify and characterise themes in marine social science data. Participants will a) gain an understanding of flexible coding and assess its usefulness for their own research\, b) practice collaboratively developing a code book and coding using sample data\, and c) learn strategies for managing and documenting collaborative coding processes. Researchers in social and ecological sciences with a range of experiences in qualitative coding are welcome. \nThe session is designed for those with limited coding experience\, but it may also be a useful refresh for those who haven’t done any coding in a while. \nProgramme: \n2:00-2:10 Introduction and Session Overview\n2:10-2:30 Flexible Coding\n2:30-2:50 Break-out sessions: Coding Practice\n2:50-3.10 Coding Discussion and Reflection\n3:10-3:15 Break\n3:15-3:30 Break-out sessions: Coding Practice\n3:30-3:45 Coding Discussion and Reflection\n3:45-3:55 Strategies for Managing Collaboration\n3:55-4:00 Closing \nThere are 16 places on this course and open to all career stages. If oversubscribed\, priority will be given to those with current or planned marine social science research\, for which flexible coding could be applied. \nThere is no cost to attend this course and if you are offered a place\, you will be contacted no later than Dec 8th with attendance details.
