DESCRIPTION:The Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources (SMMR) first Annual Conference will be held as a hybrid event from 9th – 11th May 2022.  \nThis transdisciplinary conference brings together members of the UK marine science community\, with the aim of promoting and communicating research and policy excellence.  \nThe first two days will bring together expert plenary speakers and contributed talks and e-posters outlining the latest research and management practices that address key topics related to the sustainable management of UK marine resources. The third day will be devoted to workshops and more details will be available on these soon. \nYou will also be able to enjoy networking with your peers and making new contacts across the UK marine science research and practitioner community. SUMMARY:Exploring Narratives in Environmental Challenges Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Register here – https://www.york.ac.uk/yesi/events/2022/exploring-narratives-in-enviro-challenges-workshop/ \nUsing SMMR Funded Project ‘Pyramids of Life’ as a case study\, this workshop will explore the opportunities and limitations of narratives in the area of environmental challenges. \nNarratives can be extremely powerful. We often use narratives (sometimes in the form of stories) in the area of environmental challenges to help us to understand and communicate problems\, develop solutions\, and map possible future scenarios. However\, ensuring that these narratives adequately capture complex reality is difficult. \nThis hybrid (in-person and online) workshop follows the webinar on Friday 11th March (watch webinar) and is targeted broadly at those working on environmental challenges\, but with all disciplines being welcome. In this workshop\, we build on and explore ideas introduced in the webinar\, using case studies to demonstrate an approach from literary studies to help us to incorporate critical awareness of the limitations of narratives into our communicative strategies. \nThis project includes Prof. Richard Walsh (English and Related Literature)\, Prof. Lindsay Stringer (Environment and Geography) and Prof. Jon Pitchford (Mathematics and Biology) and is part of the NERC Discipline Hopping for Environmental Solutions programme. \nWhen you register for the event you can select either the in-person or online ticket type. \nPlease email Annabel Jenkins (annabel.jenkins@york.ac.uk) with any queries.

SUMMARY:Equality\, Diversity and Inclusivity Series: Session 4 – Youth Voices
DESCRIPTION:Register here – https://cardiff.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_tgpPRs40SJWKRS8yY6qfGw \nIn collaboration with the Marine Social Science Network (MarSocSci) and Sustainable Management of Marine Resources (SMMR)\, the MSCC Social Science Task group are planning a series of seminars on EDI (Equality\, Diversity and Equality) and the marine environment. This is to promote understanding of the relationship between EDI and the marine environment and how these influence engagements with marine and coastal spaces. The seminars will provide an opportunity to learn from and engage with other experts\, including accomplished researchers and practitioners\, and share best practice and establish evidence gaps. \nOur first speakers will be from the Marine Conservation Society\, who will be speaking about some of their work engaging with different youth communities across the UK\, including their Wild Coast Sussex project. \nOur second speaker is Mhairi McCann. Mhairi is Youth STEM 2030’s Founder & CEO and has a strong belief in the positive difference young people can make to our world through STEM. Mhairi is a National Geographic Young Explorer\, the first in Scotland\, and over the past 5 years she has driven more meaningful youth involvement across several organisations nationally and internationally. For her work with Youth STEM 2030\, Mhairi was named as one of the UK’s Top 50 Women in Sustainability in 2020\, and in the NAAEE’s global 30 Under 30 for Environmental Education in 2021. Mhairi’s experience in the SDGs resulted in her being elected to the Steering Group of SDG Network Scotland and presenting a series of educational videos about the SDGs for BBC Bitesize. She currently represents Scotland as a member of the World Ocean Day Youth Advisory Council\, and took over 53\,000 pieces of plastic out the river Clyde in 104 weekly beach cleans each Saturday of 2020 & 2021. Mhairi is keen to connect and work with organisations who want to meaningfully embed young people’s voices into their decision-making.

SUMMARY:Evidence Week\, Holyrood 2022
DESCRIPTION:Sense about Science has partnered with SPICe (The Scottish Parliament Information Centre)\, and our lead partners RDS Scotland and ADR Scotland\, to deliver Evidence Week in Holyrood. For the first time\, MSPs will join researchers\, and constituents to discuss how the evidence used to make policy decisions in Scotland is scrutinised. \nThe Opening Event will see people from across Scotland put their questions directly to a panel of influential policymakers and their own MSP\, about the evidence used to decide policy issues that matter to them. \nDuring the week\, MSPs will be briefed by on cutting-edge research about pressing policy issues in Scotland\, and have the opportunity to discuss evidence with world-leading researchers. \nThe unique format of Evidence Week has been successful in parliaments in the EU\, UK\, and Ireland\, and is coming to the Scottish Parliament at the requests of Scottish voters and people within Holyrood. \n \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL.  \nThe Sustainable Management of Marine Resources-Net are hosting Professor Paul Hibbert who will run two half days of online training from 13:00 – 16:00pm on 9th February and 13:00 – 16:30pm on February 10th 2021. \nThe course will cover 4 main sections: \nDisciplines and interdisciplinarity:\nExploring what we understand by a discipline and being aware of how disciplinary communities function is an essential starting point. It helps us understand (i) the nature of our own expertise that can be of use in collaborative projects and (ii) how and why our terminologies and processes might be unfamiliar to other collaborators from other disciplines. \nUnderstanding drivers of\, and barriers to\, IDR\nIDR is more difficult than disciplinary research. In this part of the workshop we explore why that is the case and why\, nevertheless\, there are good reasons for engaging with this kind of work. Participants will be able to consider how IDR lines up with their own motivations and interests\, as well as beginning to think about how to overcome barriers. \nIDR practices and skills (part 1)\nThe primary assets collaborators bring to IDR are their disciplinary expertise and enthusiasm. But building IDR projects and communities from scratch requires thoughtful leadership. In this part of the workshop we look at the practices that help researchers grow and maintain IDR projects and build a collaborative community. \nIDR practices and skills (part 2) and conclusion\nIn this final part of the workshop\, the focus is on how researchers can begin to translate the practices and skills into their own contexts.  In this way\, the workshop group can begin to operate as a ‘community of (IDR) practice’ or problem-solving network of contacts for mutual support as new projects are explored in the future.\n\nThere are 36 places on this course and if over subscribed places will be allocated to ensure a mix of career stages and disciplines are given places on this course.
