SUMMARY:SMMR-Net Webinar - Economic\, social and environmental impact assessment of MSP for UK marine-related industries
DESCRIPTION:*Sign Up Here* \nSMMR are pleased to host Alberto Roca for the 2023 Webinar Series. \nThe talk will be 20-30 minutes long followed by 15 minutes of questions. \nTalk Title: Economic\, social and environmental impact assessment of MSP for UK marine-related industries \nMarine spatial planning (MSP) is a process of coordinating the use of marine resources in an attempt to achieve economic\, social\, and environmental objectives. This is an extremely challenging goal\, and the benefits of MSPs are contested. In this seminar\, we develop a marine input-output model for the United Kingdom. We use this model to explore relationships between greenhouse emissions\, employment and gross value added in marine-related sectors and other industries. Based on our results\, we identify three clusters of marine-related sectors\, each characterised by a different relationship between environmental and socio-economic goals. Analysing the clusters could allow marine spatial planners to understand better how their policies will impact communities and the broader environment and prioritise accordingly. \nI am Alberto Roca\, an early environmental economist interested in Multi-sectoral Input-Output Models\, Regional Models\, and Environmental and Economic Impact Assessments. Currently\, I’m a postdoctoral researcher at the University of York\, working on the MSPACE project in which our research group conducts the socio-economic and environmental economic impact assessment on UK marine-related industries due to climate change.

SUMMARY:SMMR Webinar with Tara Marshall
DESCRIPTION:Register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_PUf4-QviST-OL7Sv_N5DXw \nJoin us for the next SMMR Webinar in the series with Tara Marshall from the University of Aberdeen. \nLessons learned from the design and deployment of an industry-based tool for avoiding by catch in Scottish fisheries \nC. Tara Marshall\nUniversity of Aberdeen\nc.t.marshall@abdn.ac.uk \nAn innovative\, web-based app\, known as the Bycatch Avoidance Tool using Mapping (BATmap; https://info.batmap.co.uk )\, was co-developed by the University of Aberdeen\, the Scottish Fishermen’s Organisation and Scottish skippers and launched in June 2020. It is currently being routinely used by 16 fishing vessels operating on the west coast of Scotland. Skippers log the start and end time of each haul\, and the total catch of cod\, whiting and spurdog\, three species which they may wish to avoid catching. The data are combined and alerts\, including hotspot maps\, are automatically sent out to users when pre-defined levels of catch are exceeded. This real-time\, spatial information allows skippers to make more informed decisions about where and when to fish. The complex process of co-developing and implementing BATmap\, the first successful implementation of information sharing for bycatch avoidance in European waters\, will be reviewed to inform the ongoing development of similar initiatives in other fishing regions.

SUMMARY:ROCC WP1 Stakeholder Workshop (INVITE ONLY)
DESCRIPTION:Important to note this event is INVITE ONLY \n\nROCC\, ‘Resilience of Coastal Communities’\, is a collaborative project led by the University of Exeter and funded by SMMR\, which seeks to explore the interplay between resilience\, wellbeing\, and environmental sustainability in coastal communities in Southwest England. \nIndustries and individuals who rely on marine resources make up the social and economic fabric of coastal communities\, but increasingly face diverse threats — from climate change to political and regulatory change and crises. ROCC will develop a ‘nexus approach’ to consider the close relationships between human resilience\, wellbeing and environmental sustainability\, and to explore ways for solutions targeting one of these goals to also explicitly consider the other two. \nThis workshop will bring together key stakeholders involved in working towards these goals in the region to share experiences and help us identify how our research can support the challenges faced in addressing each of the nexus goals. The workshop aims to stimulate discussion about the value and application of this approach\, and stakeholder perspectives will inform the direction of the project and ensure that our research reflects relevant local priorities.

SUMMARY:SMMR Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Sign Up HERE \nJoin us for our next SMMR webinar\, where we will hear from Dr Chis Leakey and Professor Abigail McQuatters-Gollop\, followed by a Q and A session. \nDr Chris Leakey (MASTS and the People Ocean Planet iniative) \nDive-In\, an interdisciplinary museum exhibition for public engagement in marine science and climate action. \nChris Leakey from MASTS and their People Ocean Planet initiative will talk about a recent collaboration between a museum\, designers\, climate communication specialists and marine scientists\, developing and testing an exhibition of marine science that aimed to stimulate behavioural change in audiences. \nProfessor Abigail McQuatters-Gollop (University of Plymouth) \nFrom science to policy: Connecting research and data to decision making \nBiodiversity data and research are essential for informing management and policy\, particularly in supporting the new generation of marine legislative drivers\, which take a holistic ecosystem approach to management. In Europe\, for example\, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) seeks to achieve Good Environmental Status (GES) of European seas\, while at the global scale UN Sustainable Development Goal SDG14 strives to “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans\, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”. These instruments recognise the importance of biodiversity and marine ecosystems\, but appropriate biodiversity data and research needed to support their implementation\, assessment\, and reporting. Communicating biodiversity data and science into policy requires multiple approaches from formal engagement to casual communication over social media. From project conception through to policy assessment\, innovative and active engagement methods should be used to gain policy feedback\, help frame the science in policy terms\, and gather consensus from the wider scientific research community. Open communication and trust between scientists and decision-makers is instrumental to successfully using biodiversity science to fulfil policy needs. \n

SUMMARY:Exploring Narratives in Environmental Challenges Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Register here – https://www.york.ac.uk/yesi/events/2022/exploring-narratives-in-enviro-challenges-workshop/ \nUsing SMMR Funded Project ‘Pyramids of Life’ as a case study\, this workshop will explore the opportunities and limitations of narratives in the area of environmental challenges. \nNarratives can be extremely powerful. We often use narratives (sometimes in the form of stories) in the area of environmental challenges to help us to understand and communicate problems\, develop solutions\, and map possible future scenarios. However\, ensuring that these narratives adequately capture complex reality is difficult. \nThis hybrid (in-person and online) workshop follows the webinar on Friday 11th March (watch webinar) and is targeted broadly at those working on environmental challenges\, but with all disciplines being welcome. In this workshop\, we build on and explore ideas introduced in the webinar\, using case studies to demonstrate an approach from literary studies to help us to incorporate critical awareness of the limitations of narratives into our communicative strategies. \nThis project includes Prof. Richard Walsh (English and Related Literature)\, Prof. Lindsay Stringer (Environment and Geography) and Prof. Jon Pitchford (Mathematics and Biology) and is part of the NERC Discipline Hopping for Environmental Solutions programme. \nWhen you register for the event you can select either the in-person or online ticket type. \nPlease email Annabel Jenkins (annabel.jenkins@york.ac.uk) with any queries.

SUMMARY:SMMR Training: Skills for Inter-Disciplinary Research (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL.  \nThe Sustainable Management of Marine Resources-Net are hosting Professor Paul Hibbert who will run two half days of online training from 13:00 – 16:00pm on 9th February and 13:00 – 16:30pm on February 10th 2021. \nThe course will cover 4 main sections: \nDisciplines and interdisciplinarity:\nExploring what we understand by a discipline and being aware of how disciplinary communities function is an essential starting point. It helps us understand (i) the nature of our own expertise that can be of use in collaborative projects and (ii) how and why our terminologies and processes might be unfamiliar to other collaborators from other disciplines. \nUnderstanding drivers of\, and barriers to\, IDR\nIDR is more difficult than disciplinary research. In this part of the workshop we explore why that is the case and why\, nevertheless\, there are good reasons for engaging with this kind of work. Participants will be able to consider how IDR lines up with their own motivations and interests\, as well as beginning to think about how to overcome barriers. \nIDR practices and skills (part 1)\nThe primary assets collaborators bring to IDR are their disciplinary expertise and enthusiasm. But building IDR projects and communities from scratch requires thoughtful leadership. In this part of the workshop we look at the practices that help researchers grow and maintain IDR projects and build a collaborative community. \nIDR practices and skills (part 2) and conclusion\nIn this final part of the workshop\, the focus is on how researchers can begin to translate the practices and skills into their own contexts.  In this way\, the workshop group can begin to operate as a ‘community of (IDR) practice’ or problem-solving network of contacts for mutual support as new projects are explored in the future.\n\nThere are 36 places on this course and if over subscribed places will be allocated to ensure a mix of career stages and disciplines are given places on this course. But within the different categories of disciplines and career stages people will be based on a first come first serve basis. \nThere is no cost to attend this course and if you are offered a place you will be contacted no later than February 1st with attendance details. Please register at https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=yyZW-KgN00mqWGTvZ47wGpA9olt-CVFJiQ5iwXPE5nFUQ0pESEFCWTFHTUVNUFZENjc5NEJBUTVRRC4u \nBy filling in your details you are agreeing to SMMR retaining your details to be able to contact you about this training event.
